In one of the most remarkable pieces of self-criticism yet seen in the Arab media, Mr. Mustafa (again, not his real name) basically says that his people are hypocrites--and comes very close to asserting that religion is the primary problem. The trouble is that he condemns all religion, and scoffs at the notion of an afterlife of any kind. Here again is the false dichotomy of our modern age: an assertion that the choice is between evil "religion" and good, sensible, rational modernity. St. Paul said it best in his Second Letter to Timothy [3:1-5, 4:1-4]: people will turn to anything but the Truth in the last days.
