Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

I'm off for my holiday break and wanted to wish you all a happy and joyous Christmas. I know that the news we link to here is often grim but I'm sure that most of you who visit this site are Christians who understand that beyond the headlines we know that God is sovereign and always in control. We know that this effort to be watchful has a purpose and a focus, and that focus is on Jesus Christ.

We watch the signs of His return, but this season is all about the First Coming, not the Second Coming, so as we turn to our families and friends to celebrate the holidays we offer thanks and praise to God and above all, celebrate Jesus as the reason for the season.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
lyrics by Charles Wesley

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

My Way News - Europe forges fiscal union, sees way out of crisis
My Way News reports: "Working almost to exhaustion and persuading countries one by one, European leaders agreed Friday to redefine their continent - hoping that by joining their fiscal fortunes they might stop a crippling debt crisis, save the euro currency and prevent worldwide economic chaos [...] Friday's agreement - 23 countries are in favor and three more say they are open to the idea - would force countries to submit their budgets for central review and limit the deficits they can run [...] A breakup of the euro would have disastrous consequences. It would almost certainly trigger a financial crisis while banks figured out who owned what and while countries leaving the union awkwardly transitioned back to their own sovereign currencies."

Comment: It appears that Europe has succeeded in a rescue plan for both the euro and the Union. 26 countries said yes, one said no. There is still much work to be done though in ratifying the new treaties (it's not just one) and many steps along the way where things can still unravel. Will the European Union continue to grow and expand or collapse into a smaller more tightly integrated group? Keep watching.

Holiday Hiatus
As this Thanksgiving week begins I will be taking a break from this blog and will be using the Twitter service instead. So, please join me in keeping up with events here:

http://twitter.com/portents

Please add this to your bookmarks and if you are on Twitter, please feel free to follow me and send me a direct message (DM) to let me know. My Way News - 16 killed as Syria OKs observers in principle
My Way News reports: "The acceptance came after surprisingly heavy pressure from the Arab League, which brokered the peace plan and this week suspended Syria from the 22-member organization for failing to abide by it. On Wednesday, the league gave Damascus three days to accept an observer mission or face economic sanctions [...] French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called on the U.N. Security Council to strengthen sanctions against Assad's regime. However, Russia, which holds veto power in the council, urged caution in moving against Damascus."

CBS News - Russia: Syria crisis looks like "civil war"
CBS News reports: "Syria's allies in Russia called for urgent talks Thursday between Damascus and the opposition, saying an attack by Syrian renegade troops on a government building looks like the start of a civil war [...] 'This is all looking very much like a civil war,' Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, referring to a pre-dawn attack on Wednesday by the Free Syrian Army, a group of army defectors determined to bring down the regime."

Haaretz.Com - Report: Russia warships to enter Syria waters in bid to stem foreign intervention
Haaretz reports: "Russian warships are due to arrive at Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian news agency said on Thursday, indicating that the move represented a clear message to the West that Moscow would resist any foreign intervention in the country's civil unrest. Also on Friday, a Syrian official said Damascus has agreed 'in principle' to allow an Arab League observer mission into the country."

Comment: So Syria, one of the most heavily armed countries in the Middle East, is lurching into civil war, the West wants sanctions and Russia is standing firmly by their long-time ally and sending reinforcements to prevent "foreign" intervention. Yes, folks, those two allies are so close that Russia fails to see the irony in that. I wonder what gestures Iran will take to show solidarity with Damascus? Stay tuned.
My Way News - Egypt's Islamists confront military, vie for votes
My Way News reports: "Tens of thousands of Islamists and young activists massed Friday in Tahrir Square, confronting Egypt's ruling military council with the largest crowd in months to protest the generals' attempt to give themselves special powers over a future elected government."
My Way News - Aerial view of tsunami zone: cleaner but barren
My Way News reports: "Yet seen from a helicopter Friday carrying Associated Press journalists, there are few signs of rebuilding eight months after the March 11 disaster, triggered by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake off the tsunami-prone coast. What remains - the brown, barren, emptiness where bustling towns once stood - is a sobering reminder of how much work still lies ahead."

My Way News - Attackers hit Egyptian Christian marchers, 10 hurt
My Way News reports: "Attackers threw rocks and broken glass at a march by Coptic Christians in Cairo Thursday, injuring 10, in the latest outbreak of sectarian violence less than two weeks before the start of parliamentary elections [...] Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population, have long complained of state discrimination."

Comment: Please join me in praying for the church in Egypt.
My Way News - Syria's president still has bulwark against foes
My Way News reports: "As his Arab neighbors abandon him and his allies in Moscow warn of impending civil war, Syrian President Bashar Assad still has a strong bulwark to prevent his meeting the same fate as the leaders of Egypt, Tunisia or Libya anytime soon. His key advantages are the support of Russia and China, fear among many Syrians about a future without Assad, and the near-certainty that foreign militaries will stay away [...] Syria's tie to Iran is among the most important relationships in the Middle East, providing Tehran with a presence on Israel's border and a critical conduit to Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza."
My Way News - Israelis mapping Mount of Olives necropolis
My Way News reports: "Jews began burying their dead on the hill that later became known as the Mount of Olives about three millennia ago. It was a convenient site a short walk from the city walls. Over the centuries, burial here became linked to a prophecy in the Book of Zecharia according to which the Messiah would approach Jerusalem from the mount, splitting it in two. Those interred on the hill, this belief posited, would be the first to be resurrected."
My Way News - Queen marks anniversary of King James Bible
My Way News reports: "Queen Elizabeth II attended a ceremony at London's Westminster Abbey Wednesday to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, often considered the most influential book ever printed in the English language."
My Way News - Occupy protesters march nationwide; 300 arrested
My Way News reports: "Occupy Wall Street protesters clogged streets and tied up traffic around the U.S. on Thursday to mark two months since the movement's birth and signal they aren't ready to quit, despite the breakup of many of their encampments by police. Hundreds of people were arrested, most of them in New York."
My Way News - Europe fears contagion in debt market turmoil
My Way News reports: "Fear, that contagious emotion, spread from country to country in Europe on Thursday as panicky investors worried the euro currency union could be heading toward an ugly breakup."
My Way News - Insurgents fire rockets but miss Afghan loya jirga
My Way News reports: "Karzai asked the elders to back negotiations for a new security pact, assuring them that he would demand an end to unpopular night raids in which troops swoop down from helicopters and search Afghan homes. He said U.S. troops should be allowed to stay, but that the night raids should end and that the Afghan government, not Americans, should be put in charge of detainees."
My Way News - Military-dominated Myanmar to chair ASEAN in 2014
My Way News reports: "The chairmanship is supposed to rotate annually among the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, also known as ASEAN. But Myanmar, which has more than 2,000 political prisoners, was forced to skip its turn in 2006 because of intense criticism of its rights record. It has since held its first elections in 20 years, released Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, and eased some restrictions on the media."

My Way News - Syria faces army defectors, worldwide isolation
My Way News reports: "Syria's president faced a growing challenge to his iron rule from home and abroad Wednesday, with renegade troops launching their most daring attack yet on the military and world leaders looking at possibilities for a regime without Bashar Assad."

My Way News - Arab League confirms Syria's suspension from group
My Way News reports: "The Arab League confirmed the suspension of Syria from the organization on Wednesday and gave its government three days to halt the violence and accept an observer mission or face economic sanctions."

Comment: The real issue here is the danger of miscalculation. Might the Syrian leader precipitate a wider regional conflict in order to crush his opposition while striking out at Israel?

My Way News - Gaza militants fire rockets after Israeli threat
My Way News reports: "A Palestinian rocket exploded near a kindergarten in southern Israel on Tuesday, police said, just hours after Israel's military chief warned the army would have to carry out a broad offensive in Gaza to stop the rocket salvos [...] Over 1 million Israelis live within range of the Gaza rocket fire. The attacks have severely disrupted life in southern Israel."

Comment: This is how Palestinians demonstrate their desire for peace. I don't know, it just doesn't seem to send the right message. Maybe they need a new PR firm? Or maybe they could just stop the rocket attacks?
My Way News - Syrian soldiers killed as crisis accelerates
My Way News reports: "Army defectors ambushed dozens of Syrian troops and regime forces gunned down civilians during one of the bloodiest days of the 8-month-old uprising, which appeared Tuesday to be spiraling out of President Bashar Assad's control."

Comment: It's official, this has moved from mass demonstrations to full-fledged civil war.
My Way News - India and Pakistan agree to normalize trade ties
My Way News reports: "India and Pakistan agreed Tuesday to normalize two-way trade, signifying a gradual thaw in relations between the two bitter rivals. At the end of two days of bilateral trade talks, Pakistan agreed to give its neighbor by early next year a small list of items that India cannot trade in with Pakistan. Both sides hope to do away with the list altogether by the end of 2012, freeing up all trade between the two countries, Indian Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar told reporters."

A central topic for Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was Japan's interest in joining the trade bloc."

My Way News - Syria takes bloody new turn; 250 killed in 11 days
My Way News reports: "November is shaping up to be the bloodiest month yet in Syria's 8-month-old uprising. More than 250 Syrian civilians have been killed in the past 11 days as the regime besieges the renegade city of Homs and the conflict takes a dangerous turn, stoking fears of civil war. The U.N. estimates some 3,500 people have been killed in the crackdown since mid-March, when the uprising began. The latest figures would push that number closer to 4,000."
Reuters - Italy at breaking point; fears grow of euro zone split
Reuters reports: "EU sources told Reuters German and French officials had discussed plans for a radical overhaul of the European Union that would involve establishing a more integrated and potentially smaller euro zone. NYTimes.com - Palestinians’ U.N. Bid Faces Near-Certain Defeat
The New York Times reports: "The outcome, which had been anticipated, was laid out in typically detached diplomatic language. 'The committee was unable to make a unanimous recommendation to the Security Council,' the report concluded. There was little likelihood from the beginning that the attempt would be successful, because the United States had vowed to veto it."

Comment: As I said previously, this may appear to be a victory for Israel, but in reality it only increases the pressure to give away more land in an negotiated settlement, a settlement that may now be imposed by the U.S. and the rest of the Quartet countries that provided diplomatic cover (except France, of course) for Israel in exchange for a quick deal.
My Way News - China says still studying Iran nuke program report
My Way News reports: "The report is the IAEA's most unequivocal yet in suggesting Iran is using the cover of a peaceful nuclear program to produce atomic weaponry. Russia and China are powerful friends of Iran and are veto-holding permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. They have gone along with four previous rounds of sanctions aimed at persuading Tehran to cooperate with U.N. nuclear inspectors, but both have opposed further measures."

My Way News - Israel's warnings on Iran get quiet nods in Gulf

My Way News - Science fiction-style sabotage a fear in new hacks
My Way News reports: "For years, ill-intentioned hackers have dreamed of plaguing the world's infrastructure with a brand of sabotage reserved for Hollywood. They've mused about wreaking havoc in industrial settings by burning out power plants, bursting oil and gas pipelines, or stalling manufacturing plants. But a key roadblock has prevented them from causing widespread destruction: they've lacked a way to take remote control of the electronic 'controller' boxes that serve as the nerve centers for heavy machinery. The attack on Iran changed all that. Now, security experts - and presumably, malicious hackers - are racing to find weaknesses. They've found a slew of vulnerabilities."

TIME.com - The Vatican’s Radical Ideas on Financial Reform
Time reports: "Those politicians who think the Dodd-Frank law went too far in attempting to reform Wall Street will likely need smelling salts after taking a look at a proposal for reforming the global financial system that was released by the Vatican on Monday. The proposal’s centerpiece is a call for the formation of a global political authority that would, among other things, possess broad powers to regulate financial markets. The reality of globalization, says the document, necessitates a 'gradual, balanced transfer of a part of each nation’s powers to a world authority and to regional authorities.' The Vatican envisions this global authority playing a role not just in overseeing financial markets, but also disarmament and arms control, food security and peace efforts."

Comment: Sure, that's what we need, a global authority to manage commerce, what could go wrong?
Reuters - Euro on hold as summit looms
Reuters reports: "The euro held steady on Wednesday, having lost some of its gloss as markets geared up for what could be a disappointing outcome at a keenly awaited European Union leaders' summit. But news that a meeting of European finance ministers had been canceled fueled fears that any accord could lack details."

Comment: How this long drama plays out is anyone's guess, but I suspect it will cause the ten EU countries that are not in the Eurozone to feel a certain sense of pride at their good judgement. Will the EU disintegrate? Stay tuned!

My Way News reports: "Gaunt and pale, Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit returned home Tuesday after more than five years in captivity, freed in a lopsided exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners that could greatly complicate Mideast peace prospects and strengthen the Islamic militant Hamas."

Comment: I'm as glad as anyone that Shalit is free, but if this can be seen as a victory for Hamas then this not a good outcome. Appeasement is the easy way out.

Yahoo! News - Election-year goals of Christian group questioned
Yahoo! News reports: "These preachers believe demons have taken hold of specific geographic areas, including the nation's capital. They also promote a philosophy of public engagement known as the "seven mountains," which urges Christians to gain influence in business, government, family, church, education, media and the arts as a way to spread righteousness and bring about God's kingdom on earth. The language seems close to dominionism, the belief that Christians have a God-given mandate to run the world."

Comment: You probably already know this, but it's worth stating, the Second Coming is not dependent on U.S. domestic politics. Dominionism is a false teaching that contradicts scripture, including prophetic scripture. The world is not going to become more Christian as the end times progress, it will become less Christian. This is self-evident to even the casual Bible student, which leads me to believe the true goal of this movement is not preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ but of securing power for themselves under a Christian banner.

Haaretz reports: "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet voted early Wednesday morning to approve a prisoner swap that will see Gilad Shalit, the IDF soldier who has been in Hamas captivity for the last five years, return to Israel."

Comment: Those nice peace-loving Palestinians have been entertaining Private Shalit at a vacation resort in Hamas controlled territory for five years now. As a peace gesture, they are going to let him go without any conditions. They realize that they could have let him go at an time, but he was just having so much fun they didn't want to spoil it. It's great to see the Palestinians really showing their sincere desire for peace.

My Way News reports: "Worried about its dwindling numbers, the Roman Catholic church in southern India is exhorting its flock to have more children, with some parishes offering free schooling, medical care and even cash bonuses for large families, church officials said Tuesday."

Comment: They better be careful or they will become a fertility cult just like Mormonism. Or maybe they always were? It should go without saying that the true church of Jesus Christ is not based on family lineage but on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. You may inherit a religious tradition from family, but a true relationship with God is something every individual discovers on their own with the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

My Way News - Afghans rally in Kabul, demand NATO troops leave
My Way News reports: "Hundreds of people marched through the streets of the Afghan capital on Thursday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of international military forces ahead of the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion."

Comment: So what will really happen when the U.S. pulls out? Afghanistan will be destabilized by a proxy war between dueling militias. Scary stuff when you consider that both India and Pakistan have nuclear weapons and it wouldn't take much for them to start fighting each other again. And then there's the question of what Iran will do once the U.S. pulls out. The U.S. may soon go, but that does not mean that there will be peace in Afghanistan.

Comment: Ok, so we have our answer, all of that drama is quietly deflated as a committee debates for weeks or months. The next move is Abbas'.
My Way News - Iran says it delivers new cruise missiles to navy
My Way News reports: "Iran said Wednesday it has begun large-scale production of a domestically-developed cruise missile designed for sea-based targets and capable of destroying warships [...] Vahidi said the missile, which has a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers), can travel at low altitudes and 'can sink giant warships.' Christian Post - Heckler Calls Obama the Antichrist; Obama Proclaims "Jesus Is Lord"
The Christian Post reports: "The interruption took place immediately after Obama took the stage and the president was forced to stop talking for a moment [...] On his way out the door, the heckler proclaimed that Obama was the antichrist [...] Before he continued with his speech, Obama announced: 'First of all, I agree, Jesus Christ is the Lord. I believe in that.' The crowd immediately cheered with approval."

CNN - A movement to paint Obama as the Antichrist?
CNN reports: But Mooney observes that the White House pool report records the heckler as being much more blunt, yelling 'Barack Obama is the Antichrist!' The president interrupted his remarks at the fundraiser, held at Los Angeles' House of Blues, to respond to the heckler. 'First of all, I agree Jesus Christ is the Lord,' Obama said. 'I believe in that. I do have a question, though. I think the young man may have left his jacket...''"

Comment: So, Obama again professed his Christian faith in public. I doubt it will do much good, as so many refuse to hear it. Is he a Christian? Only God knows his heart. I'm inclined to give anyone the benefit of the doubt if they make a public profession of faith. Is he my kind of Christian? What kind of standard is that?. There are many kinds of Christians, many denominations, many dogmas. There are conservative Christians and liberal Christians and there's no doubt he is of the liberal variety. All of that is meaningless really. He has professed faith in Jesus and that should be enough. It should be enough, but of course, it's not, not for those who actually think an American president will be the antichrist.
My Way News - Israel approves 1,100 new homes in east Jerusalem

My Way News reports: The scrolls, considered by many to be the most significant archaeological find of the 20th century, are thought to have been written or collected by an ascetic Jewish sect that fled Jerusalem for the desert 2,000 years ago and settled at Qumran, on the banks of the Dead Sea. My Way News - The American "allergy" to global warming: Why?
My Way News reports: "The Arctic Ocean's summer ice cap has shrunk by half and is expected to essentially vanish by 2030 or 2040, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center reported Sept. 15. Ashore, meanwhile, the Arctic tundra's permafrost is thawing and releasing methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. These changes will feed on themselves: Released methane leads to warmer skies, which will release more methane. Ice-free Arctic waters absorb more of the sun's heat than do reflective ice and snow, and so melt will beget melt. The frozen Arctic is a controller of Northern Hemisphere climate; an unfrozen one could upend age-old weather patterns across continents."

My Way News - Palestinian leader rejects intl peace blueprint
My Way News reports: "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly suggested Saturday that he would reject a peacemaking blueprint put forward by international mediators, saying he would not agree to any proposal that disregarded Palestinian conditions for the resumption of peace talks."

Comment: What an extraordinary week of events centered on the epicenter of Bible prophecy - Israel and Jerusalem. As this week ends more pressure than ever is on Israel to make more compromises and give up more land to the Palestinians who say they want peace and yet keep firing off missiles at their peace-partner. Abbas' U.N. gambit means that the same international pressure that was focused on Abbas to prevent a U.N. vote is now on Israel to show some progress on the long-stalled peace talks. Progress, of course, defined as Israeli concessions.

The Security Council will meet next week to discuss the Palestinian request and we should have some early indication as to whether they intend to move quickly on the request or have a committee review the proposal for a few months or so. This will effectively table the matter for the short-term and it's at this point that the Palestinians will call out their rioters to create a spectacle for the media. They could also seek to keep the pressure on by taking the matter to the General Assembly and asking for a change in status, less than statehood but more than the observer status they have now.

In a very real sense the Palestinians are driving the process now and the U.S., Israel and the U.N. are merely reacting. An ever present danger is the volatile mix of increased expectations by the Palestinian people (who don't really understand the U.N. process - it's a bureaucracy after all) for real change and the desire of everyone else to maintain the status quo of the Quartet's negotiating process. The stage is set for public protests that can easily spin out of the control of the Palestinians who hope to stage manage them for the media.

Finally, how will Hamas react to the new political reality in which Abbas returns as a hero of his people? The long simmering civil war between Fatah and Hamas could get hot quickly if Hamas perceives they have been made irrelevant. Never mind the absurdity of a state in the midst of a civil war asking for recognition from the U.N. (because most of the world is willing to overlook that), the situation on the ground could get very dangerous for Israel if Hamas decides to launch rocket attacks from Gaza to undermine Abbas' peace efforts.

Most of the world focused on this last week as the crucial time for Mideast peace because of the drama at the U.N., but the real drama is just about to begin. Stay tuned.
