My Way News - Analysis: How Syria's Assad seized momentum in war
My Way News reports: "Western leaders predicted Assad would fall in few months. Almost no one thinks that now. My Way News reports: "U.S. President Barack Obama's national security adviser opened a visit to Israel by telling leaders Wednesday that peace with the Palestinians can only be reached through direct negotiations leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state."

Comment: Now that Iran-allied Hamas as been added to the Palestinian government, I wonder just how "independent" a Palestinian state would be?

Rumors of War - Iran

My Way News - Iran admiral: US ships are a target in case of war
My Way News reports: "Iran will target American aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf should a war between the two countries ever break out, the naval chief of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard warned Tuesday as the country completes work on a large-scale mock-up of a U.S. carrier."

Comment: Now that the world has become so much more peaceful, this would be a good time for the U.S. to cut the defense budget. Sure, the U.S. has enemies, but they're not smart, they would never gang up and attack at the same time. One-at-a-time is the rule. No doubt they will all wait patiently until the draw down in Afghanistan is finished and then and only then challenge the U.S.

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - US, EU hit Russia with new sanctions over Ukraine
My Way News reports: "The United States and its European allies hit more than two dozen Russian government officials, executives and companies with new sanctions Monday as punishment for their country's actions in Ukraine, yet the penalties stopped short of targeting Russia's broader economy and it remained unclear if they would work. In Moscow, there was relief that the sanctions were not as far-ranging as feared."

Signs in the Sun

My Way News - Antarctic prime spot for Tuesday's solar eclipse
My Way News reports: "The solar eclipse will be visible to skygazers in Antarctica, Australia, and the southern Indian Ocean about 0600 GMT (2 a.m. EDT). More than 240 people, mostly in Guinea, are suspected of having caught the illness, which causes horrific suffering, including bursting blood vessels and bleeding from ears and other orifices. There is no vaccine, no treatment and the disease is almost always fatal. But a handful of the infected do survive. "

My Way News - Abbas tries to reassure Israel about Hamas role
My Way News reports: "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says any unity government with the Islamic militant group Hamas would follow his political program, an apparent attempt to reassure the West. [...] The Palestinian split came in 2007 when Hamas seized Gaza, and reconciliation efforts failed."

Comment: It will be interesting to see if Hamas will renounce their commitment to the destruction of Israel. Otherwise, it's hard to imagine them being party to peace talks.

The White House said U.S. sanctions could be levied as early as Monday. My Way News reports: "Israel broke off Mideast peace talks and brought the U.S.-brokered process to the brink of collapse Thursday, protesting a reconciliation agreement between the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and the militant group Hamas, the Jewish state's sworn enemy."

Comment: Can't blame Israel really, Hamas has already declared war on Israel and has backed that up with repeated missile attacks, their desire for peace is somewhat lacking. After this, it would be very difficult to make the case that the Palestinians really want peace with Israel.

It's the first of four eclipses this year and the first of four total lunar eclipses this year and next. Doomed Damascus - Believers Persecuted

My Way News - Syrian troops choke off rebels north of Damascus:
My Way News reports: "Syrian troops triumphantly swept through some of the last remaining opposition strongholds north of Damascus, including a much coveted ancient Christian hamlet, sending rebel fighters fleeing to nearby hills amid an ever tightening noose. [...] During a government-led tour of the village Monday, the toll of the past few months on Maaloula was clear, including to Christian sites. It was not clear, however, whether the wreckage to Christian buildings was intentional, or whether the ancient sites were merely caught in the crossfire. The church bell and cross were missing from the Mar Sarkis convent, while icons of saints, copies of the holy bible, papers and glass littered the floors."

The Ukrainian government accused Russia of stirring up the unrest and tried to flush the assailants from some of the seized buildings, setting off fiery clashes in one city. Comment: It appears that the latest push for Mideast peace has ended. Since Obama is now a lame duck, it will fall to the next U.S. president to try again, as it always does. Unless, of course, an isolationist comes to power in America, leaving it to the EU to step into the role of peace negotiator.

My Way News reports: "In a surprise move that could derail U.S. peace efforts, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday resumed a campaign for further international recognition of a state of Palestine, despite a previous promise to suspend such efforts during nine months of negotiations with Israel."

Comment: This suggests that Kerry's mediation efforts have come to an end. It's a shame that the Palestinians think they have such leverage and that the U.S. allows them to think that. There are few governments in the world more fragile than the Palestinian Authority. It's almost comical to see them try to flex their muscles on the world stage.

Rumors of War - Security of Jerusalem - Doomed Damascus

My Way News - Bombing hits Israeli military patrol near Syria
My Way News reports: "A roadside bomb hit an Israeli patrol near the frontier with the Golan Heights on Tuesday, the army said, wounding four soldiers in the most serious violence to strike the area since the Syrian conflict began three years ago. Israel said it responded with artillery strikes on Syrian army targets. [...] Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed the strategic area in a move that was not internationally recognized."

Comment: Or, you could say Israel won the Golan territory in war and now owns it. War is historically how countries settle questions of the ownership of territory. The territory is in dispute before the war...not after (for example, China, and all those islands that are currently in dispute in the South China Sea, a region many expect to be a flashpoint for war...to answer the question of who controls the islands). That's the point of fighting over territory. This rule applies almost everywhere for every country...except Israel. Somehow the laws of history are turned upside down in the unreality field surrounding Israel as her enemies press their cause after losing.

My Way News - East vs West Ukraine conflict not a new Cold War
My Way News reports: "U.S. brands including McDonald's and Pepsi have a big presence in Russia, and the European Union does far more trade with the country than the U.S. The Europeans are less eager than Washington to take punitive economic measures, in part because European companies from German engineering firm Siemens to British oil giant BP have major Russian investments. And Russia supplies almost a third of Europe's natural gas."

These are the factors that make nations across Eastern Europe watch events in Ukraine - and tremble. From leaders to ordinary people, there is a palpable sense of fear that Russia, seemingly able to thumb its nose at Western powers at will, may seek more opportunities for incursions in its former imperial backyard. The question many people are asking is: Who's next?"

My Way News - Russian troops engage in war games near Ukraine
My Way News reports: "Russia conducted new military maneuvers near its border with Ukraine on Thursday, and President Vladimir Putin said the world shouldn't blame his country for what he called Ukraine's 'internal crisis.' In Crimea, where the public will vote on Sunday whether to break away from Ukraine and become part of Russia, jittery residents lined up at their banks to withdraw cash from their accounts amid uncertainty over the future of the peninsula, which Russian troops now control."

Comment: War games, oh, ok, it's all just a game, what a relief!  I think the reality is simply that Crimea is now part of Russia. The real question is how much more of Ukraine will become part of Russia before this is over?

[...] China claims virtually the entire South China Sea. Nansha is the Chinese name for the Spratlys, a chain of resource-rich islands, islets and reefs claimed partly or wholly by China, Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam."

Comment: For the first time in many years, the potential for armed conflict between great powers seems to be rising in all parts of the world.

Gog Alliance

My Way News - Putin uses carrot and stick to dominate neighbors
My Way News reports: "As a counterweight to the European Union, Russia's Vladimir Putin is pursuing an ambitious dream rooted in memories of Soviet glory: The Eurasian Union. It's a strategy to pull former Soviet satellite states back into Moscow's orbit through a combination of incentives and threats. And embattled Ukraine, a huge country of 46 million people, has lain at the center of the game plan. Putin has put the Eurasian Union at the top of his presidential agenda, voicing hope that the new grouping could become a major economic powerhouse on par with the EU. He has sought to lure ex-Soviet nations with cheap energy and loans, while also expanding his military presence in these countries whenever he can."

Comment: Ezekiel 38:2-9 suggests that Putin may well succeed in putting together his own personal alliance. He will have to find a better name though, EU is already taken.

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - US announces visa restrictions on some Russians
My Way News reports: "The Obama administration slapped new visa restrictions Thursday on pro-Russian opponents of the new Ukraine government in Kiev and cleared the way for financial sanctions as the West began punishing Moscow for its occupation of Ukraine's Crimea region. [...] Local government officials in Crimea are now seeking to separate from Ukraine and on Thursday set a March 16 date for a referendum vote on whether the region should become part of Russia."

Famine

My Way News - More than 300,000 face famine in Mozambique
My Way News reports: "Mozambique agriculture minister Jose Pacheco says that more than 300,000 people in the southern African state face famine this year. Speaking on state radio on Sunday, Pacheco said the famine, which affects mainly the central and southern regions of Mozambique, has been caused by various factors, including drought, flooding and insect plagues."

Rumors of War - Kings of the East

My Way News - China vows tough reforms, stronger defense
My Way News reports: "China announced a 12.2 percent increase in military spending to $132 billion. That followed last year's 10.7 percent increase to $114 billion, giving China the second-highest defense budget for any nation behind the United States, which spent $600.4 billion on its military last year. Increases in China's military budget have regularly exceeded both total increases in government spending and the nation's rate of economic growth. That has allowed lavish spending on new hardware and better conditions for soldiers, raising concerns about how China intends to use its new-found power amid a rise in tensions with Japan over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea."

Security of Jersualem - Rumors of War

My Way News - Israeli naval raid nabs rocket shipment
My Way News reports: "Israeli naval forces on Wednesday seized a ship laden with rockets allegedly bound for militants in the Gaza Strip, and officials accused Iran of orchestrating the delivery in an elaborate 5,000-mile (8,000-kilometer) journey that included covert stops across the region. The Syrian-made M-302 rockets would have put Israel's biggest cities well within range of Gaza, where militants already possess thousands of less powerful rockets."

My Way News - Reports: Facebook looks to buy solar drone company
My Way news reports: "If Facebook does buy Titan Aerospace, the purchase could fit with the goals of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Internet.org project. The Facebook-led partnership, which includes Qualcomm Inc., Samsung and Nokia, was launched last summer and aims to connect the more than 5 billion of the world's 7 billion people who are not already online. Presumably, Internet.org could use Titan's solar-powered atmospheric satellites to serve as airborne wireless access points. Google Inc. [...] launched a similar undertaking earlier this year with the goal of getting everyone on Earth online. Called Project Loon, the effort launched Internet-beaming antennas aloft on giant helium balloons."

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - Putin talks tough but cools tensions over Ukraine
My Way News reports: "Stepping back from the brink of war, Vladimir Putin talked tough but cooled tensions in the Ukraine crisis Tuesday, saying Russia has no intention 'to fight the Ukrainian people' but reserves the right to use force. As the Russian president held court in his personal residence, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Kiev's fledgling government and urged Putin to stand down."

Pestilence

My Way News - Giant virus revived after more than 30,000 years
My Way News reports: "The researchers said their finding suggests that dangerous germs might emerge in the future as permafrost thaws because of global warming or mineral exploration. They said sampling permafrost to look for ancient viruses that infect amoebas is an inexpensive and safe way to assess that potential threat."

Comment: So they thaw out some really old permafrost and the germs just spring to life and the scientists gently suggest that dangerous germs might emerge in a future defined by global warming? I suppose they don't want to scare people, but I think we all get the point that we would have no natural immunity to ancient germs and therefore this could be a big deal.

Persecution

My Way News - North Korea deports Australian missionary
My Way News reports: "North Korea on Monday deported an Australian missionary detained for spreading Christianity in the country, saying he apologized for his anti-state religious acts and requested forgiveness. [...] Defectors from the country have said that the distribution of Bibles and secret prayer services can mean banishment to a labor camp or execution."

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - Russia sets Ukraine agenda with diplomacy, threats
My Way News reports: "Russian troops said to be 16,000 strong tightened their stranglehold on Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula Monday, openly defying the U.S. and the European Union and rattling world capitals and stock markets. The West struggled to find a way to get Russia to back down, but with little beyond already threatened diplomatic and economic sanctions, global markets fell sharply over the prospect of violent upheaval in the heart of Europe."

Comment: The Russian occupation of Crimea is a done deal. The only real question now is, will they also take eastern Ukraine? However it ends, it's likely to leave Russia in a far stronger position and the preeminent leader of an anti-Western faction that includes China, North Korea (as Kings of the East) and Iran (Persia). It's an axis of malcontents and rebels whose hand seems destined to grow stronger.

My Way News - Syria militants claim Christians agreed to pay tax
My Way News reports: "Militant fighters should not impose an Islamic tax on Christians in Syria, a radical Jordanian preacher facing terrorism charges said Thursday, days after an al-Qaida breakaway group in Syria claimed Christian leaders under its control agreed to pay the tax in return for protection. [...] The authenticity of the two-page document circulating online since Wednesday could not be independently verified [...] It said the Christian leaders opted for paying the tax when they were asked to choose one of three options: convert to Islam, remain Christian and pay the tax or 'refuse and be considered warriors who will be confronted with the sword of the Islamic State.'"

Comment: Please join me in praying for Christians in Syria, they are facing difficult times.

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - Obama warns Russia over military moves in Crimea
My Way News reports: "Armed men described as Russian troops took control of key airports in Crimea on Friday and Russian transport planes flew into the strategic region, Ukrainian officials said, an ominous sign of the Kremlin's iron hand in Ukraine. President Barack Obama bluntly warned Moscow 'there will be costs' if it intervenes militarily."

Comment: It appears to this observer that Obama acquiesced to the Russian annexation of Crimea. Sure, he said there would be costs, but Russia is a big country, they can afford to pay the costs.

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - Report: Armed men take airport in Ukraine's Crimea
My Way News reports: "Dozens of armed men in military uniforms seized an airport in the capital of Ukraine's strategic Crimea region early Friday, a report said. Witnesses told the Interfax news agency that the 50 or so men were wearing the same gear as the ones who seized government buildings in the city, Simferopol, on Thursday and raised the Russian flag. The report said the men with 'Russian Navy ensigns' first surrounded the Simferopol Airport's domestic flights terminal."

Comment: If they seize local TV and radio stations next then we will know that the Russian annexation of Crimea is under way.

Roaring Seas

My Way News - Science academies explain global warming reality
My Way News reports: "Man-made global warming is worsening and will disrupt both the natural world and human society, warns a joint report of two of the world's leading scientific organizations. [...] Increases in extreme weather, melting glaciers, rising seas and oceans getting more acidic are already happening, the 36-page report said."

Rumors of War - Jerusalem Security

My Way News - Israel takes risk with airstrike on Hezbollah
My Way News reports: "Israel has opened a new front in its attempts to halt weapons smuggling to Hezbollah, striking one of the group's positions inside Lebanon for the first time since the sides fought a war eight years ago. This week's airstrike, meant to prevent the Islamic militant group from obtaining sophisticated missiles, is part of a risky policy that could easily backfire by triggering retaliation. [...] Hezbollah rained some 4,000 rockets and missiles on Israel in 2006, mostly short-range, unguided projectiles. Israel believes the group now possesses 100,000 rockets and missiles. These include weapons with longer ranges, guidance systems and larger warheads, are capable of striking anywhere in Israel. The weapons come from Syria and Iran."

Rumors of War - King of the North

My Way News - Russia war games over Ukraine prompt US warning
My Way News reports: "Russia ordered 150,000 troops to test their combat readiness Wednesday in a show of force that prompted a blunt warning from the United States that any military intervention in Ukraine would be a 'grave mistake.' [...] The maneuvers will involve some 150,000 troops, 880 tanks, 90 aircraft and 80 navy ships, and are intended to 'check the troops' readiness for action in crisis situations that threaten the nation's military security,' Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies."

Comment: While the risk of direct military confrontation between Russia and the West is slim, a Russian invasion or annexation of Crimea would reveal just how little leverage leverage the West has over an increasingly assertive Russia.  It would, however, place Russia securely in the "rogue" camp along with Iran and North Korea, and that would probably not be a good thing for world peace and stability.

My Way News - Pro-Russian rally in Crimea decries Kiev 'bandits'
My Way News reports: "Dozens of pro-Russian protesters rallied Tuesday in this Crimean Peninsula city, bitterly denouncing politicians in Kiev who are trying to form a new government, with some even calling for secession from Ukraine. A Russian lawmaker stoked their passions by promising that Moscow will protect them. [...] An armored personnel carrier and two trucks full of Russian troops made a rare appearance on the streets, vividly demonstrating Russian power in this port city where the Kremlin's Black Sea Fleet is based."

My Way News - Riot police move in against Kiev protest camp
My Way News reports: "The police, armed with stun grenades and water cannons, attacked the camp after at least 13 people - including six officers - died and hundreds were injured in street clashes. The violence was the deadliest in nearly three months of anti-government protests that have paralyzed Ukraine's capital in a struggle over the nation's identity. [...] The protests began in late November after Yanukovych turned away from a long-anticipated deal with the European Union in exchange for a $15 billion bailout from Russia."

My Way News - Egypt: Sinai bombing raises worries on tourism
My Way News reports: "The bus, carrying more than 30 South Korean Christians, their Egyptian guide and an Egyptian driver was waiting to cross into Israel, the next stage in a tour of Biblical sites that took them earlier to Sinai's ancient Saint Catherine's Monastery. The driver and two South Koreans got out of the bus and checked the cargo hold. As they were reboarding, the suicide bomber pushed through the open door into the bus and detonated his explosives, Interior Ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif said."

Roaring Waves

My Way News - Princes William, Harry sandbag against UK floods
My Way News reports: "England, which has been lashed by wind and rain since December, had its wettest January since records began in 1766, and the rain has continued this month. Storms this week have brought wind gusts of more than 100 mph (160 kph). Floods have drenched the southwestern coast of England, the low-lying Somerset Levels and the Thames Valley west of London, where hundreds of properties have been swamped after the river burst its banks. Another bout of gale-force winds hit the country Friday, bringing large waves and up to 1.6 inches (4 centimeters) of rain."

Rumors of War - Kings of the East

My Way News - Kerry faces tough sell in China on N. Korea, tension
My Way News reports: "Chinese ships have also stepped up their presence in the South China Sea, particularly in regards to the Philippines, which is seen by Beijing as weak and overly dependent on the U.S. for protection. Diplomats are concerned that Beijing may be planning to declare an air defense zone above those heavily traversed waters, further raising the chances of confrontation with American surveillance planes and other military flights."

My Way News - US, 26 countries launch effort to fight outbreaks
My Way News reports: "Infectious diseases are a growing concern. Earthquakes

My Way News - Strong quake shakes China; no casualties reported
My Way News reports: "A powerful earthquake struck a sparsely populated area of China's far western region of Xinjiang on Wednesday, damaging some houses, though no casualties were reported. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.9 quake was centered 268 kilometers (167 miles) east-southeast of Hotan at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the quake at magnitude 7.3 and said at least 20 smaller aftershocks ensued over the following two hours."

Roaring Waves

My Way News - Fierce debates as Britain sinks further underwater
My Way News reports: "The River Thames has burst its banks, rail lines have been washed away, villages have been turned into islands and soldiers are out on the front lines filling sandbags. As residents battled to save their homes - and British politicians battled one another - yet another storm hit the U.K on Wednesday, pummeling the west coast with torrential rain and wind gusts up to 106 mph (170 kph). [...] The coast is being eroded by the sea, while areas like the Somerset Levels rely on dredging and pumping just to keep water at bay. And across the country, thousands of houses have been built on flood plains. As sea levels rise with global warming, some say it may become too expensive to save them."

Roaring Waves

Ars Technica - Business as usual + sea level rise = losses of up to 9% of global GDP
Ars reports: "Things like extreme weather and droughts are the high-profile impacts of climate change—they are easy to see and understand. Sea level rise is much more subtle and slow-moving, but it's inexorable. Even if we stabilize our climate at a new, higher average temperature, the seas will continue to rise for centuries as the added warmth slowly melts ice and causes the water in the oceans to expand in volume."

Comment: Have you seen the massive waves hitting Great Britain lately? Or what about the flooding in London as the Thames rises? I don't think the industrialized world is ready for nature to take aim at coastal cities in the way this study suggests will happen.

Roaring Waves

My Way News - River Thames breaches its banks near London
My Way News reports: "The River Thames has burst its banks after reaching its highest level in years, flooding riverside towns upstream of London. [...] Iran already has surface-to-surface missiles with a range of about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) capable of reaching Israel and U.S. military bases in the region."

My Way News - Jordanians worry about fallout from Mideast peace
My Way News reports:  "Israelis and Palestinians may be hugely skeptical about the U.S.-led peace negotiations their leaders have been roped into, but the Jordanians seem worried that they actually might succeed. The kingdom is already home to the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Jordanian lawmakers and others fear an accord might lead to a new influx of refugees."

Comment: It's an interesting development and a novel way to gauge how successful the secret talks are, that regional powers are starting to closely examine how well they would fare if the peace talks succeed.

My Way News - Klitschko warns Ukrainian tempers are heating up
My Way News reports: "Protests that began in late November have drawn substantial crowds to downtown Kiev, sometimes numbering above 100,000 people, and an extensive protest tent camp has been set up on the capital's main square. The protests turned violent in mid-January when demonstrators clashed with police for four days, raining stones and firebombs on riot police and setting their vehicles afire."

Global Community

My Way News - Facebook barrels ahead on 10th anniversary
My Way News reports: "As Facebook enters its second decade, the company faces a new set of challenges in reaching the next billion users, the billion after that, and the one after that, including the majority of the world without Internet access. It must also keep the existing set interested even as younger, hipper rivals emerge and try to lure them away. There are 1.23 billion Facebook users today, or roughly 17 percent of the world's population. Although that's far from connecting the whole world, Facebook is here to stay. It's reached critical mass."

Comment: The world is becoming more and more connected. People can now watch global news events and react by sending status updates (and Tweets) to their friends and to everyone in real-time. Expect this trend to continue and accelerate as people in developing countries continue to join online services.

My Way News - Christians flee attacks in Nigeria's northeast:
My Way News reports: "Before the usher could finish warning worshippers of the gunmen approaching, the attackers were storming into the church, locking the main door, exploding homemade bombs and firing into the congregation. The shooting continued as some people scrambled to escape out of windows and through the back door of the sacristy. Some had their throats slit in last Sunday's attack on St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Wada Chakawa village in northeast Nigeria."

My Way News - Report: Moderate earthquake hits southern Iran
My Way News reports: "Iranian state TV says a magnitude 5.5 earthquake has jolted a sparsely populated area in the country's south. The report said the quake hit Sunday evening in the district of Goharan, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran. It says many buildings were damaged and that rescue workers were on the scene."
