My Way News - Officials say deeply personal information in hackers' hands
My Way News reports: "Deeply personal information submitted by U.S. intelligence and military
personnel for security clearances — mental illnesses, drug and alcohol
use, past arrests, bankruptcies and more — is in the hands of hackers
linked to China, officials say. [...] Nearly all of the millions of security clearance holders, including some CIA, National Security Agency and military special operations personnel, are potentially exposed in the security clearance breach, the officials said. [...] two people briefed on the investigation disclosed Friday that as many as 14 million current and former civilian U.S. government employees have had their information exposed to hackers, a far higher figure than the 4 million the Obama administration initially disclosed. American officials have said that cybertheft originated in China and that they suspect espionage by the Chinese government, which has denied any involvement."
Comment: They keep dribbling out bits of additional details about this but I wonder if instead of provoking outrage, each new revelation desensitizes the public to the scope of the data theft. The revelation that the Social Security numbers were not encrypted is just stunning, that's criminal incompetence on the part of some database administrator who deserves to be prosecuted for that negligence. The real question not even addressed in this report is, in an age of cyberwarfare, how will the U.S. respond to repeated attacks on national security data?
