Vladimir Putin welcomes surprise visit by Bashar al-Assad in prelude to peace talks - UPI.com
UPI reports: "Assad showed up for an unscheduled visit with Putin in the Black Sea
resort city of Sochi Monday, where the Kremlin leader is set to hold
peace talks with Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Iranian leader
Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday. Kremlin officials are meeting in Sochi to
talk about various defense issues.
Syria's civil war has raged for six years, killed hundreds of thousands
and displaced more than 6 million civilians. Russia and Iran have sided
with Assad in the conflict, which has run concurrently with efforts to
defeat the Islamic State terror group in the north African nation."
Comment: Aside from the amusing insight shared by the reporter that Syria is in Africa (seriously, look at a map before you report on a country), it's noteworthy that Russia, Turkey and Iran - future members of the Gog Alliance - are meeting to decide the fate of Syria. It's kind of nice that they bothered to invite Assad.
