My Way News - China hosts ASEAN meeting amid South China Sea tensions
My Way News reports: "China hosted Southeast Asian defense ministers on Friday in an effort to burnish its reputation in a region wary of its territorial ambitions, while expectations grow that the U.S. might directly challenge Chinese claims in the South China Sea. [...] With the world's second-largest defense budget, China's military — especially its navy — is gathering formidable capabilities. It will soon deploy its first aircraft carrier and is rapidly adding advanced destroyers, missile cruisers and nuclear submarines. A massive military parade in Beijing last month showcased new missiles permitting China to hit targets — including U.S. Navy ships and bases — throughout the region."

My Way News - Ailing Ebola nurse in UK may be rare case of relapse
My Way News reports: "The World Health Organization says it's possible in rare instances for patients who survived Ebola to develop the lethal disease again, when the virus lingering in the body starts to replicate at high levels. My Way News - Study: Ebola in male survivors can survive up to 9 months
My Way News reports: "Doctors have found that Ebola can linger in some male survivors for up to nine months but aren't sure if that means they might still be infectious, according to new research. In a study of 93 men in Sierra Leone, scientists found the Ebola virus in semen samples from about half of them. The risk seemed to decline over time. "

My Way News - Obama extends US military mission in Afghanistan into 2017
My Way News reports: "Military commanders have argued for months that Afghans needed additional assistance and support from the U.S. to beat back a resurgent Taliban and keep the Islamic State from using the country as a haven. The president had originally planned to withdraw all but a small embassy-based force from Afghanistan in late 2016, shortly before leaving office. Under the new $15 billion-a-year plan, the U.S. will maintain its current force of 9,800 through most of 2016, then begin drawing down to 5,500 late in the year or in early 2017."

Chinese admiral visits Iran, wants closer defense cooperation | Reuters
Reuters reports: "China and Iran have close diplomatic, economic, trade and energy ties, and China has been active in pushing both the United States and Iran to reach agreement on Iran's controversial nuclear program. [...] Last year, for the first time ever, two Chinese warships docked at Iran's Bandar Abbas port to take part in a joint naval exercises in the Gulf and an Iranian admiral was given tours of a Chinese submarine and warships. Iran and Russia have both provided support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war. China, however, remains a low key diplomatic player in the Middle East despite its dependence on the region's oil."

Three Palestinians, including two attackers, were also killed. While Israel says the rumors are unfounded, clashes have quickly spread across Israel and into the West Bank and Gaza Strip."

My Way News - Amid Russian airstrikes, a Putin craze takes hold in Mideast:

The reactions underscore that while the West may criticize Putin for supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad, there is some relief in the region at the emergence of a player with a coherent — if controversial — strategy. Jerusalem has seen a wave of stabbing attacks linked to tensions over a sensitive holy site in the Old City that is sacred to Jews and Muslims. In recent days the attacks by Palestinian assailants have spread to the rest of Israel, while violent protests have erupted in the West Bank and along the Gaza border, where seven Palestinians were killed on Friday."

My Way News - Israel struggles to contain wave of stabbing attacks
My Way News reports: "Unrest that erupted several weeks ago at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site spread Friday to Gaza in the form of deadly border clashes with Palestinian protesters, as Israeli security forces struggled to contain a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers. [...] Recent days have seen a series of attacks by young Palestinians wielding household items like kitchen knives, screwdrivers and even a vegetable peeler. The youths had no known links to armed groups who have targeted Israeli soldiers and civilians at random, complicating security efforts. [...] The latest unrest began about three weeks ago, when Palestinians repeatedly barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City [the Temple Mount, Ed.], hurling stones, firebombs and fireworks at police."

My Way News - Life on Mars? NASA says planet appears to have flowing water
My Way News reports: "Scientists in 2008 confirmed the existence of frozen water on Mars. Now instruments aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have yielded what researchers said is the strongest evidence yet that water in liquid form trickles down certain Martian slopes. My Way News - Migrant arrivals unlikely to bring major changes to Europe
My Way News reports: "Experts say, however, that there's virtually no chance that the newcomers will radically change the demographics or cultural makeup of the continent — as many populist leaders have contended. They cite recent research by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center which estimated that in 2010 Muslims made up 6 percent of the population of Europe and Russia and this was expected to rise to just over 10 percent by 2050. In the same period, the percentage of Christians is set to decline from 74.5 percent to just over 65 percent — with part of that decline due to the increasing numbers of those with Christian backgrounds who are turning their backs on religion altogether. [...] although projections of numbers of migrants may need to be updated."

Comment: Well, there's an understatement. I hope they don't make policy based on 2010 projections without taking into account the demographic and population surge caused by the mass exodus of refugees from the Middle East. To say there will be virtually no change in the demographics or cultural makeup of Europe is merely wishful thinking after what we've seen in the last month and what is still to come. Refugees traditionally return home after the the war, but I doubt the majority of those recent arrivals will make the return journey. Still unanswered, why are the rich Gulf states, with whom the refugees share ties of ethnicity and religion, not the safe haven that Europe is?

My Way News reports: "Japan's parliament early Saturday approved contentious legislation that enhances the role of the country's military by loosening post-World War II constraints, after the ruling bloc defeated opposition parties' last-ditch effort to block a vote. The upper house's approval makes the legislation into law, reinterpreting Japan's constitution and fundamentally changing the way it uses its military."

My Way News - Europeans shut borders, block bridges, to halt migrant surge
My Way News reports: "Thousands of migrants were trapped Friday in a vicious tug-of-war as bickering European governments shut border crossings, blocked bridges and erected new barbed-wire fences in a bid to stem the wave of humanity fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East and Africa."

Comment: Why can't the rich Gulf states take them? Shouldn't there be some kind of pan-Arab solidarity or at least sympathy? Why is it all up to Germany and Europe to care for Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan refugees?

My Way News - Palestinians and Israel forces clash in Jerusalem, West Bank
My Way News reports: "Violence between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces spread beyond the walls of Jerusalem's old city on Friday, with at least eight Palestinians shot in clashes in the West Bank and Israeli policemen injured by firebombs in a restive part of the city. [...] Most of the unrest had until now focused on Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site — a hilltop compound sacred to both Jews and Muslims. The compound is a frequent flashpoint and its fate is a core issue at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

My Way News - Moscow urges US to engage Syria, offers military talks
My Way News reports: "Russia on Thursday strongly urged the United States and its allies to engage the Syrian government as a 'partner' in the fight against the Islamic State group, and offered to share any information about its military supplies to Damascus with Washington. New satellite imagery, meanwhile, showed the recent arrival of Russian tanks, armored personnel carriers and other military equipment at an air base in Syria's coastal Latakia province, confirming reports by U.S., Israeli and other officials of a military buildup."

My Way News - UN nuclear conference votes down anti-Israel resolution
My Way News reports: "An Arab-led attempt to censure Israel over its 'nuclear capabilities' failed Thursday, with states backing the Jewish state at the U.N atomic agency's annual meeting voting down a resolution critical of the Jewish state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the result as a 'great victory.' Israel has yet to formally declare its widely-known status as a nuclear weapons state — a status that Arab nations and Iran insist presents the greatest threat to Mideast peace. That view is opposed not only by Israel but also the United States and other Western nations that for years have said that Iran's potential to make such arms is the key danger in the region."

Comment: I'm increasingly leaning towards the view that the Covenant With Many of Daniel 9:27 will be a regional security agreement and not (as many have conjectured) a peace treaty with the Palestinians. The Palestinians could have had a peace agreement years ago but they proved to be intransigent. I think other issues have come to the fore now and the region has moved on. After the next war there will be a greater emphasis on arms control and demilitarization. The Iran Agreement has provided a framework for a multilateral arms control process that is phased in over many years, that is most likely what a seven-year CWM will be. Stay tuned, time will tell!

Temple Mount

My Way News - Jerusalem's holiest site, a raw nerve in Mideast conflict
My Way News reports: "A rectangular hilltop compound in Jerusalem is ground zero of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, it is Islam's third holiest spot and is home to an iconic golden-domed shrine. But to Jews it is the Temple Mount, their holiest place, and the only religious site in the world revered by Jews where Jews are explicitly forbidden to pray. This sensitive arrangement — and attempts to change it — lie at the heart of the unrest that rocked Jerusalem this week."

Earthquakes

My Way News - Strong quake shakes Chile, tsunami warning issued
My Way News reports: "A powerful magnitude-8.3 earthquake hit off Chile's northern coast Wednesday night, causing buildings to sway in the capital of Santiago and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the Andean nation's entire coast. Officials reported one death in a town north of the capital and heavy waves and some flooding in a handful of coastal cities. The tremor was so strong that people on the other side of the continent, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reported feeling it. [...] A magnitude-8.8 quake and ensuing tsunami in south-central Chile in 2010 killed more than 500 people, destroyed 220,000 homes, and washed away docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts. That quake released so much energy, it actually it shortened the Earth's day by a fraction of a second by changing the planet's rotation."

My Way News - Clashes at Jerusalem holy site for third straight day
My Way News reports: "Israel's prime minister vowed tougher measures to curb Palestinian violence at an emergency meeting Tuesday night after police clashed with Palestinian protesters in a third straight day of unrest at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site during the Jewish new year holiday of Rosh Hashanah. [...] The compound in Jerusalem's Old City is a frequent flashpoint and its fate is a core issue at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is known to Jews as the Temple Mount, site of the two biblical Jewish temples. Muslims revere it as the Noble Sanctuary, where they believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Non-Muslim visitors are only allowed to enter the site at specific hours and are banned by police from praying there."

My Way News - Hungary declares emergency, seals border, detains migrants: Hungary sealed off its border with Serbia with massive coils of barbed wire Tuesday and began detaining migrants trying to use the country as a gateway to Western Europe, harsh new measures that left thousands of frustrated asylum-seekers piled up on the Serbian side of the border. Border-free Europe unravels as migrant crisis hits record day | Reuters
Reuters reports: "Two decades of frontier-free travel across Europe unraveled on Monday as countries re-established border controls in the face of an unprecedented influx of migrants, which broke the record for the most arrivals by land in a single day. Germany's surprise decision to restore border controls on Sunday had a swift domino effect, prompting neighbors to impose checks at their own frontiers as thousands of refugees pressed north and west across the continent while Hungary sealed the main informal border crossing point into the European Union."

Confident China moves to challenge U.S. in Beijing's backyard | Reuters
Reuters reports: "An assertive China under President Xi Jinping now believes its military has the technology to at the very least make the United States think twice before undertaking any military adventures in what China sees as its backyard. [...] Analysts see three potential arenas for such a showdown - the South China Sea, where China has a series of overlapping territorial disputes with its neighbors, the East China Sea, where remote islets are a source of friction between Beijing and U.S. ally Japan, and any conflict over self-ruled Taiwan."

China appears to be working on third airstrip on disputed South China Sea islets | Reuters
Reuters reports: "China appears to be carrying out preparatory work for a third airstrip in contested territory in the South China Sea, a U.S. expert said on Monday, citing satellite photographs taken last week. My Way News - Israel outlaws Muslim groups that protest at key holy site
My Way News reports: "Israel's defense minister has outlawed two Muslim activist groups that have been holding rallies against Jewish visitors at a contentious Jerusalem holy site. [...] The two are informal movements of mostly Arab women and elderly men who demonstrate when Jews visit the compound known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and Jews as the Temple Mount. It's revered as Judaism's holiest site and Islam's third-holiest [and not even mentioned in the Quran... Ed.]. Religious Jews have been increasingly visiting the site, seeking to reverse an existing ban on Jewish prayer there. Palestinians say Israel is encroaching on the site."

My Way News - Presidential candidates duel on Iran; House GOP in turmoil
My Way News reports: "Debate on the Iran nuclear deal morphed into full-blown political spectacle Wednesday as Donald Trump and Ted Cruz held a rally to denounce it, Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a speech to praise it and congressional Republicans turned on each other angrily as they grasped for a last-ditch play to stop it. [...] Congress has until Sept. 17 — a week from Thursday — to pass a disapproval resolution of the Iran deal, under legislation passed earlier this year giving lawmakers the right to review it. Republican leaders did not sound receptive to conservative attempts to change the terms of the debate."

My Way News - US-Israel spat over Iran deal may sideline Palestinians
My Way News reports: "In recent months, many in the Middle East had assumed — some in hope, others with concern — that once the Iranian nuclear issue was resolved, the United States would make another push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. But the opposite seems more likely. After a drawn-out confrontation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Iranian nuclear deal, the White House seems to have little appetite for what would almost certainly be a new round of tensions with the Israeli leader over the terms of Palestinian statehood."

Rumors of War - Kings of the East

My Way News - China pledges to cut 300,000 troops from its massive army
My Way News reports: "Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday pledged to cut China's 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army by 300,000 troops, amid rising manpower costs and technological capabilities that reduce the need for large numbers of personnel. The announcement at the start of a massive parade in Beijing commemorating Japan's World War II defeat 70 years ago brings the armed forces' headcount down to about 2 million, still making it the world's largest standing military."

My Way News - China marks Japan WWII defeat, shows rising power in parade
My Way News reports: "Under Xi, who took power as party leader in late 2012, Beijing has sent ships to confront Japan's coast guard near disputed islands in the East China Sea, blockaded Philippine island outposts and constructed whole islands from reefs, topping them with airstrips and other military infrastructure."

Cabinet ministers told lawmakers that the nation, struggling to cope with more than 150,000 arrivals this year, was determined to seal its borders to unwelcome travelers from the Middle East, Asia and Africa."

My Way News - Egypt gas find sparks panic in Israel about Israeli reserves
My Way News reports: "Egypt's new natural gas bonanza is causing an uproar in Israel, with energy stocks plummeting and recriminations over indecisiveness and infighting that have delayed production from the country's own gas fields. The government is currently struggling to get parliament to approve its natural gas business plan, but observers fear Israel may need to reassess everything now that Egypt, which had been cast as both an export destination and a partner, may have found its own independent solution."

My Way News reports: "An emergency meeting was called for Sept. 14 on the migrant crisis in which more than 300,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean this year — often those fleeing Syria, Eritrea, Iraq and Afghanistan. Hundreds have drowned in capsized boats, and 71 people were found locked in the back of a truck on the Budapest-Vienna highway."

Comment: I wonder if this will force the EU to take a more active role in world affairs? There's really no solution to the problem, no way to stop the flow of refugees, without imposing order on the Middle East.

My Way News - Iran president opposes parliament vote on nuclear deal
My Way News reports: "President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday he opposes a parliamentary vote on the landmark nuclear deal reached with world powers because terms of the agreement would turn into legal obligations if passed by lawmakers. Rouhani told a news conference that the deal was a political understanding reached with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany, not a pact requiring parliamentary approval. The deal also says Iran would implement the terms voluntarily, he said."

Comment: So, in other words, Iran has agreed to the deal but they don't want to be legally obligated to follow through. I wonder what Secretary Kerry would say about that? Perhaps he has a secret side-agreement for that?

My Way News reports: "Two rallies in the capital, Beirut, last weekend drew up to 20,000 people, and dozens were hurt in clashes between protesters and security forces at the time. Another huge protest is planned for Saturday. The protests have been driven by anger over garbage piling up on the streets of Beirut, following the closure of a main landfill. The government's failure to resolve the crisis has evolved into wider protests against a political class that has dominated Lebanon since the end of the country's civil war in 1990 and is widely seen as dysfunctional."

My Way News - China's Xi staying the course despite sliding economy
My Way News reports: "Having accumulated more power than any Chinese leader in 20 years, President Xi Jinping is expected to stay the course in hopes that the market will correct itself and the economy returns to an even keel. The longer that takes, the greater the risks for the Communist Party, which has managed to keep a tight grip on power in part because of its ability to deliver economic growth. [...] A slowing economy may now compel them to seek non-economic sources of party-state legitimacy [...] that potentially raises the possibility of even greater levels of nationalism and xenophobia, tendencies percolating in Chinese society that break out into periodic spasms of violence and rage, especially directed toward traditional antagonist Japan."
