My Way News - Best-selling Bible to undergo revision

My Way News reports: "The New International Version, the Bible of choice for conservative evangelicals, will be revised to reflect changes in English usage and advances in Biblical scholarship, it was announced Tuesday. The revision is scheduled to be completed late next year and published in 2011."

Comment: I don't really see the need for a revision, but as long as they don't change the message of salvation, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. There is also an opportunity here for them to build more internet friendly and Web 2.0 friendly applications rights into the rights packages retained by the publishers, who traditionally place restrictions on use of their content. This is why it's easy to find a King James Version of the Bible (which is in the public domain) online but much harder to find a more contemporary version. It would be far better for modern versions, that are more understandable to contemporary readers, to be accessible online. The Bible, more than any other work of literature in history, should be freely available to all. The publishers and editors should be compensated, but in a manner that does not prevent modern distribution methods.
